“In August 1965, when Watts erupted in flames, theSituationist International saw something beyond a race riot. They saw the spectacle-commodity system devouring itself. For five days, residents looted and burned not from mindless rage but as an instinctive rejection of consumer capitalism’s empty promises of fulfilment always dangling just out of reach. The Situationists celebrated this uprising against commodity fetishism. What made Watts revolutionary wasn’t just revolt against racism but its exposure of the alienation poisoning all modern industrial society.
