Nottingham, November 1977 – the year of the Silver Jubilee. God Save The Queen. Roads closed as storms batter the county. Walk-outs by workers at the cycle factory and ironworks. Fire-fighters work to rule. Wildcat strikes at power stations cause unpredictable outages.
An infestation… of Rats.
An epidemic… of Whooping Cough.
On Bonfire Day, a young WPC patrolling Nottingham city centre is outraged to see the cover of a newly-released long-playing record flagrantly displayed in the window of the Virgin Records store: Never Mind The (expletive deleted) Here’s The Sex Pistols.
What follows is a farcical yet all-too-true tale of a footnote in the history of freedom of speech as the Law attempts to prosecute a Word under the obscure Indecent Advertisements Act of 1889 and the most high-profile barrister in the land takes on Pretty Vacant local magistrates.
