Jerusalem, with Matthew Teller and Pam Mandel in conversation
Date(s) - Tuesday, 5th April
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Travel writers Matthew Teller and Pam Mandel discuss the the city of Jerusalem, a city under pressure in this free, online event.
Matthew Teller is a journalist whose work regularly covers a total of thirteen countries of the Middle East. In his book Nine Quarters of Jerusalem; a new biography of the Old City he explores the lives of the Palestinians and Israelis living there, but also brings out stories from its Indian and West African communities, its Dom Gypsies, its Islamic Sufi mystics, its Syriac and Armenian churches – all these and others whose lives are often overlooked. His writing challenges prevailing narratives and celebrates the social and cultural diversity of those surviving within the conflict.
He will be in conversation with Pam Mandel, the author of The Same River Twice: a memoir of dirtbag backpackers, bomb shelters, and bad travel. Much of her book rests a lot on conflicted emotions about her experiences of Israel and Jewish culture.
