Are You Somebody? is the candid story of Nuala O’Faolain, born one of nine children into the penniless family of an overwhelmed mother and charming but absent father. Nuala O’Faolain was saved from a harrowing childhood by her love of books and reading. Though she ultimately became one of Ireland’s best-known journalists, her professional success did little to ease her longing for a deep connection to the world. She pushed at the boundaries of the confining Catholic Ireland she grew up in and has distilled her experiences into a wisdom that could come only from a woman who refused to shrink from life.

A runaway international best-seller, it was No. 1 on The New York Times best seller list. A strikingly vivid and starkly emotional memoir

The Irish Book Group is open to everyone wishing to discuss the book in question. You don’t have to be Irish!

Our book groups are open to all. Attend every meeting, occasionally or just once in your life. All we ask is that you read the book in advance and take part in the discussion. There’s a short introduction by a member of staff, a group regular, or someone we know with a special interest in the book in question.

Refreshments provided

You can obtain the book from wherever you like – libraries are good! – but copies of our book group titles are available in advance from the bookshop at 15% discount in the lead up to the event.

We have four book groups, fiction, non-fiction, Pagan, Irish
