Horace’s Odes, with their wide-ranging themes encompassing love, friendship and the uncertainty of human life, are one of those timeless works of art that are always contemporary. Aidan Everett presents us with lively translations from the Latin interspersed with his own new poems, full of verve and wit, in which the Roman poet’s interlocutors talk back.
The book includes Latin text and detailed notes.
These renderings of the Odes skilfully negotiate between Horace’s age and our own, and Everett’s fictional ‘answering voices’ strike the same balanced note. An impressive achievement.
