Fiction Book Group reads: Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin
14a Long Row, Nottingham
Our book group is open to all. Attend every meeting, occasionally or just once in your life. All we ask is that you read the book in advance and take part in the discussion. There’s a short introduction by a member of staff, a group regular, or someone we know with a special interest in the book in question. This is a casual group discussion, there is no author or presentation.
To wrap up the year, we will meet slightly earlier in the month to discuss James Baldwin’s ground-breaking second novel, which established him as one of the great American writers of his time
David, a young American in 1950s Paris, is waiting for his fiancée to return from vacation in Spain. But when he meets Giovanni, a handsome Italian barman, the two men are drawn into an intense affair. After three months David’s fiancée returns and, denying his sexuality, he rejects Giovanni for a ‘safe’ future as a married man — a decision that will bring tragedy, longing and regret.
