Nottingham city appears in many of D.H. Lawrence’s works. Nottingham Station, Nottingham Castle, The Park, Sneinton, Nottingham High School and University College Nottingham, are just a few of the places that feature in his novels, short stories and poems including major works such as Sons and Lovers.

Like many cities in the early 20th century, Nottingham both benefited and suffered from the effects of rapid population growth and industrialisation. For Lawrence the city seemed dirty and crowded but also a place for adventure and excitement, whether that be his characters drinking in local pubs or going to a Notts County match or just being in a city, huge compared to the rural environment of Eastwood where he grew up. Lawrence himself studied and worked in Nottingham and thought nothing of walking into the city from Eastwood and back. This book revisits the Nottingham of D.H. Lawrence in his fiction and his real life.
