This is an anthology of poetry, song and verse written by
Leicester Chartists in the 1840s. Chartism in Leicester had a huge
following and local poets like Thomas Cooper, William Jones, T.R. Smart and
John Henry Bramwich were themselves in the leadership of the movement. From
their writing, it is possible to gain a sense of their dignity and
commitment to universal suffrage in the face of oppression and starvation.

Much of the verse in this anthology has not been published since the 1840s
and provides a unique insight into the Chartist movement. The introduction
and notes are by Ned Newitt.
