Tommy Bings is a 10 year-old growing up on Clifton, one of the new council house estates outside Nottingham. Life is tough. His father is a drunken brute. Tommy escapes his normal existence by entering the imaginary world of his favourite characters from the Beano. In many ways his life resembles that of his hero Dennis the Menace. After trouble on Clifton, Tommy’s mother takes him to stay with her sister Gwen for Christmas in the Lincolnshire seaside town of Mablethorpe. Mablethorpe is Tommy’s idea of heaven. Tommy and his mother go to stay with his aunt for Christmas. Unfortunately before they leave, the North Sea deluges the coast in the notorious East Coast floods of 1953. Back on Clifton an atmosphere of robbery, violence and murder are relieved by a special guest appearance by Lenny the Lion.
