There are so many wonderful poems about babies; about their gorgeousness and also their disproportionate tyranny, how they tug at our hearts all day and then yank us awake in the small hours. Ever since we set up Candlestick Press, people have been asking us to bring out a pamphlet of poems about them. And so, with great pleasure – and about time too! – we are delighted to welcome our latest pamphlet into the world – Ten Poems about Babies. Poet Imtiaz Dharker has chosen and introduced the poems and needless to say she has done a fabulous job. She has selected ten poems (from her much longer short-list and even longer long-list) that “I kept coming back to, perhaps because something in them triggered a memory of that exact baby smell, the weight of the head on the chest, the exhaustion and confusion of feelings, the havoc and wonder that surrounds such a coming”.
Featuring a beautiful wood engraving on the cover by illustrator Beth Krommes, we hope that Ten Poems about Babies will strike a chord with new parents and indeed with anyone who can’t resist babies.
Imtiaz Dharker is a poet, artist and documentary film-maker. She won the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry, 2014.
