Third print run now available. “Tumbling brickwork, dark empty passageways, broken beams and decaying dormitories … for five years one of the world’s most historic prisons has been left to the elements and the vandals” Nottinghamshire’s historic Lowdham Grange Borstal was a unique and bold penal experiment which led to the creation of many successors worldwide. Why, how and where was it created? Who were the key people involved? What type of criminal was sent there? What was demanded of them and those charged with their care? With its adjacent Officer’s estate it was a key part of the local community with it’s ‘Lads’ working in local farms and villages. And, local villagers participating in sporting, social and other events at ‘The Grange’. Demolished in the 1990s it has left an outstanding legacy locally, internationally and amongst its former ‘Lads’ and their Prison Service carers. This well illustrated, 260 page book describes the fate of young people in the English penal system; it then explores some of the challenges, developments and people who created this innovative institution. Drawing on the testimonies of former staff, their families, former Borstal lads and locals; a picture is then drawn of what it was like to live and work at ‘The Grange’.
