Nottinghamshire is one of England’s

finest counties for starting out in

cycling. There’s a wide range of

scenery: forests and copses, a great

river and small streams, a dynamic

city, historic market towns, villages

and secret, hidden hamlets. The

county is steeped in history.

There are over 3000 miles of minor

road, most with very little traffic –

ideal for cycling – and miles of

bridleway, on which you can legally

cycle, canal towpaths where you

can ride with a (free) permit, and

many special cycle and cycle-plus-

pedestrian tracks. Above all it’s

gentle country – you won’t have to

walk up many hills! – but rolling

enough that you will find broad

views from its modest summits.

The forty routes in this book,

ranging from 4 to 45 miles, on-

and off-road, have been specially

selected, surveyed and described by

expert cyclists from the Nottingham

cycle campaign group Pedals and

the Nottinghamshire members of

the national Cyclists’ Touring Club,

the CTC.
