In spring, a young indigenous girl Katherena and her mother leave their home by the sea and move in to a countryside residence. Peaceful and isolated with two trees, snowdrops, and creaky stairs, Katherena has difficulty in adjusting to her new home. She no longer enjoys drawing at her new desk. Seeing her lonely, Katherena’s mother asks her to visit their older neighbor Agnes, who is a clay artist. Starting from summer, Katherena forms a friendship with Agnes. Katherena shows her paintings to Agnes, who shows her garden and clay-shaped birds and animals. Katherena teaches Agnes Cree words while Agnes tells her about rural life. During fall, Katherena starts to help Agnes at her garden by preparing the soil for next spring and feeding worms. By the time it’s winter, Agnes cannot get outside her home and Katherena and her mother prepare salmon stew and take it over to Agnes’s home. With the passage of seasons, Agnes becomes frail. Yet, the bond between Katherena and Agnes keeps on growing. They continue to share their mutual love for flora, fauna, and art and their strengthening relationship allows Katherena to grow.
