Join in the discussion with our panel as they consider how Jews are portrayed in photographs in the British media – and how they could be portrayed differently.

For some years now, Keith Kahn-Harris has been highlighting how British newspaper stories about British Jews are often illustrated with stock photos of Haredi Jewish men. In response, he has collaborated with Rob Stothard, the photographer who took one of the most famous stock photos, to produce a book of portraits that showcase the diversity of British Jews.

Their book What Does a Jew Look Like? will be launched at this event and will be available to purchase at a discounted price.

To discuss the issues raised by the book, Keith and Rob will be joined by Fiona Shields, Head of Photography at the Guardian and Rabbi Frank Dabba Smith, who has worked as a professional photographer for The Economist as well as publishing books and exhibitions of his photographs. Some of the subjects of the book will also speak about their involvement in the project.

Keith Kahn-Harris is a lecturer at Leo Baeck College, runs the European Jewish Research Archive at the Institute for Jewish Policy Research and is a research fellow at Birkbeck College. The author of seven books, he has published widely on issues of Jewish concern (as well as on heavy metal and the warning messages inside Kinder Surprise Eggs – yes, really).

Robert Stothard has photographed elections in Egypt, conflict in Ukraine and along the length of the Irish border. He is the co-author of two other publications, Tilbury and Removal: A Short Guide to the United Kingdom Immigration Detention Estate.
