The World is in Our Words, book launch with Chris Searle
Pinstone Street, Sheffield, S1 2HH
Teacher/writer Chris Searle’s autobiography The World is in Our Words will be launched at Sheffield Town Hall 2.00pm-3.30 on Tuesday 22 November. There is much about his teaching in Sheffield, in particular the five years when he was headteacher of Earl Marshal School in Fir Vale, Sheffield and the school’s anti-racist work and ‘no permanent exclusions’ policy; as well as the work of the Local Education Authorities and Sheffield Unified Multicultural Education Service (SUMES), created in 1986, which eventually established some 160 posts.
Teachers and youth workers, and those with a particular interest in education, anti-racism and its relevance to local communities will be especially welcome.
The first part of Chris’s autobiography is Isaac and I : A Life in Poetry, which covered his earlier years, including the famous school students strike in Stepney, which took place in protest against his sacking by the governors of Sir John Cass school for publishing student poetry.
