In the last thirty-five years, politicians of all parties ceded power over fundamental sectors failed-experiment-coverof our economy to a new oligarchy of corporations. Government has become the servant, not the master, of corporate interests. Andrew Fisher describes this as a failed political experiment. It is not about blaming the bankers, though much opprobrium has rightly been apportioned to them. Nor is it a partisan attack on the failures of Conservative or Labour governments. Instead, this is a book about the much larger political crisis that still threatens our living standards – and how we can resolve it.

Andrew co-founded LEAP Economics in 2006 – a network of left economists and campaigners to co-ordinate a socialist alternative. He still co-ordinates LEAP and blogs regularly on political economy. As the 2007/08 financial crisis hit, Andrew was working in Parliament, and witnessed first-hand the political panic as the finance sector collapsed. He now works as a policy officer for the PCS trade union.

Steve Battlemuch is the Labour City Councillor for Wollaton West, speaking in a personal capacity.
