Sheila Rowbotham on Alice Wheeldon
14a Long Row, Nottingham, NG1 2DH
Alice Wheeldon was a Derby socialist, feminist, pacifist and suffragette who was arrested on the charge of conspiracy to kill the Prime Minister, Lloyd George. The main evidence against Alice was from an MI5 agent. She was sentenced to ten years, but released early at the request of Lloyd George. There is now a Blue Plaque commemorating her in Derby. Her great-granddaughter, Chloe Mason, will join us. Chloe has been campaigning to have the case recognised as a miscarriage of justice.
Sheila Rowbotham has written Friends of Alice Wheeldon which describes the life of this activist who provided a safe house for those fleeing conscription in WW1.
Organised in association with Derby People’s History.
Admission is £3 on the door, including 15% off any purchases on the night. Refreshments available.
