The prequel to Vasily Grossman’s Life and Fate, the War and Peace of the 20th Century, now in English for the first time.Life and Fate was broadcast over eight hours, over the BBC’s range and brought this major Russian novel to public attention in the UK but it was only the second half of a two-part work, the first half of which was published in 1952 in the Soviet Union. The characters in both novels are largely the same and so is the story line; Life and Fate picks up where Stalingrad ends, in late September 1942.
Robert Chandler is the translator of both Grossman books and many other Russian books. In this event he will talk about Grossman’s life and work and the literature of the former Soviet Union.
