Punk at 40 with Graham Caveney and Nick Stevenson

Saturday, 26th November, 2016
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Five Leaves Bookshop*
14a Long Row, Nottingham, NG1 2DH
It’s been forty years since bands like The Damned and The Sex Pistols unleashed their snarling brand of anarchic rock ‘n’ roll on a Britain that was being forced to re-negotiate the stories it was telling about itself. Punk helped to re-write these narratives. Abrasive, incendiary and seemingly nihilistic, bands like The Slits and The Clash provided a soundtrack to the urban discontent that would characterise Britain in the late ‘70s – a reflection of and challenge to the nation’s dole queues, racism and inner city anomie. Tonight’s talk will discuss the origins, aesthetics and legacy of Punk. Drinks will be provided, spitting is optional.
‘Nasty’ Nick Stevenson is a Reader of Sociology who works on popular music. ‘Grevious’ Graham Caveney is an ex-music journalist whose memoir on growing up in the 70s will be published by Picador May 2017.

Admission for this event is £3 and refreshments will be available.
