Lowdham Book Festival

lowdham book festivalThis day is organised by Five Leaves Bookshop, being the last day of Lowdham Book Festival. Sixteen free events for adults, large bookfair, cafe, children’s program.
Speakers include: John Lucas on whistling, Mr Jones the Planner on towns in Britain, Gillian Darley on Ian Nairn.

12.30-1.30pm:
John Lucas: A Brief History of Whistling, Village Hall – John Lucas revisits this lost, most democratic art, which is more complicated to do than to simply “put your lips together and blow”.
Ann Featherstone and Deborah Tyler-Bennett: The Days of the Music Hall, Methodist Chapel – some singing, some stories, all drawn from the heyday of musical comedy. An illustrated talk.

2.00-3.00pm:
Gillian Darley: Ian Nairn, an illustrated talk, Methodist Chapel – In the 1950s and 1960s Ian Nairn was Britain’s most important architectural critic, and an unlikely TV star.

3.30-4.30pm:
Jones the Planner: Towns in Britain, Methodist Chapel – visiting the best and the worst of the cityscapes of several major cities, including Nottingham. An antidote to ‘crap towns’!
