Jill Liddington on Vanishing for the Vote: The Suffragette Census Boycott in Nottingham and Beyond

Jill Liddington will be talking about the Suffragettes and the campaign for the vote, including in Nottingham.

Vanishing for the Vote is Jill Liddington’s most recent book and was published in 2014. It relates the story of what happened at census night Sunday the 2nd of April 1911. the Liberal government which continued to deny women the vote ordered every household to comply with the census requirements Suffragette organisations urged women to boycott this census.

Jill’s talk will outline the background to this and relate what happened in Nottingham. Reference will be made to the known suffragettes active in the city including Helen Watts, Alice Dowson and her daughter in law Helena.

 Jill Liddington is the author of Rebel Girls and Vanishing for the Vote. She is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, a member of the Society of Authors and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
