Raja Shehadeh is one of Palestine’s leading writers, his best known books are about walking in Palestine which document the creeping annexation and restricted access to land in the occupied territories. He lives in Ramallah, Palestine’s de facto capital and here he will talk about the impact of the occupation on his home town… the replacement of green spaces and olive groves by tower blocks and concrete lots.

But it’s not just the buildings but the development of consumerism and growing religious piety reshaping the city as hopes for a brighter future for Palestine have faded. Raja walks the streets and tells the stories of the buildings and the people and events in his life.

Raja Shahadeh is a lawyer and founder of the Palestinian human rights organisation Al-Haq. His book Palestinian Walks won the Orwell prize. Despite everything continues to dream of a future beyond the occupation, a kind of neo-Ottoman federation where Arabs and Jews would live as equals.
