Five Leaves Open Book Group discusses Small Things Like These, by Claire Keegan
14a Long Row, Nottingham, NG1 2DH
Our book group is open to all. Attend every meeting, occasionally or just once a lifetime. All we ask is that you read the book in advance and take part in the discussion. There’s a short introduction by a member of staff or a group regular or someone we know with a special interest in the book in question.
It is 1985, in an Irish town. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, Bill Furlong, a coal and timber merchant, faces into his busiest season. As he does the rounds, he feels the past rising up to meet him – and encounters the complicit silences of a people controlled by the Church.
The new work from the author of Foster, Small Things Like These is a story of hope, quiet heroism and tenderness. Shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
Given it’s a short month, December’s book group is early, a short book and a seasonal one!
