Digital and Mathematical Poetry, with Pippa Hennessy and Sonja Dengler
14a Long Row, Nottingham, NG1 2DH
Poetry is an art, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be scientific, or that it can’t make use of new technology to present itself beyond the confines of a static printed page. These two poets have taken their eclectic interests in all things digital and mathematical, and built those into their writing.
Pippa Hennessy is a former software developer who is fascinated by many aspects of science and technology. She has published a series of poems inspired by quantum theory, and is now immersed in the possibilities of simple digital poetry – what happens if the words move around? if they combine semi-randomly? if the reader has some control over the direction of the poem?
Sonja Dengler studied combined honours in English Literature and Mathematics at university, and she mixes these interests to great effect in her mathematical poetry. What does mathematics really mean? can a poet explain a mathematical concept in a way that the reader can grasp its essence? what happens if you apply mathematical principles to the structure of a poem?
In this event, both poets will read from and talk about their work, and we’ll open the floor to discussion of the relevance of science and technology to the writing and reading of poetry.
Tickets £3, advance booking essential as space will be limited.
