Crisis: The Greeks Have a word for it
14a Long Row, Nottingham, NG1 2DH
The UK launch of Crisis, a bilingual anthology of contemporary Greek poets on the continuing crisis in their country.
For the last five years Greece has been at the epicentre of a brutal economic, political and social crisis. Recession, austerity, cuts to wages, pensions and public spending have led to political paralysis, general strikes, riots in Athens and the dramatic rise of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn. Unemployment is over 27%, the highest in the EU. Youth unemployment is 60%. One in three households now lives in poverty. In the last few years, the suicide rate has increased by more than 40%.
Poets Dinos Siotis and Thanasis Triaridis report from a civil-war waged by generals in ‘grey suits and white collars’, where the city squares are ‘churches of the enraged’ lit by the ‘small bonfires from Molotov cocktails.’
