Sociologists Dr Christian Karner and Dr Nick Stevenson from the University of Nottingham will be in conversation about the contemporary relevance and popular appeal of one of the world’s most eminent and prolific social theorists, Professor Zygmunt Bauman, in celebration of his 90th birthday.

The evening will include a talk exploring Bauman’s use of metaphors in analysing modernity and the usefulness of this approach, in addition to a critical engagement with questions of Bauman’s contemporary relevance, and the different ways in which his work can be read and understood in relation to the 21st Century.

Dr Nick Stevenson is a Reader in Cultural Sociology at the University of Nottingham. His books include Cultural Citizenship (OUP, 2003), David Bowie (Polity Press, 2006), Education and Cultural Citizenship (Sage, 2010) and Freedom (Routledge, 2011). He is currently working on a manuscript called Human Rights and the Future of Freedom.

Dr Christian Karner studied at the Universities of Graz and Nottingham and at the London School of Economics. He is Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Nottingham and has been a Research Associate in the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota. His books include Ethnicity and Everyday Life (2007), Negotiating National Identities (2011), The Use and Abuse of Memory (2013, co-edited with Bram Mertens), and The Commonalities of Global Crises (forthcoming/ 2016, co-edited with Bernhard Weicht).
