This talk will trace the living history of slavery in the rarely, and in some cases, never before seen paintings, murals, sculptures, drawings and prints by African, African American and Black British artists working today. Warring against the stranglehold of white supremacy, black artists endorse a radical politics of resistance to cut to the heart of a centuries’ long tradition of art-making, a powerful tradition which has been vastly neglected but which has survived against all odds to dramatize the enduring conviction long held by women and men, both enslaved and free, that “struggle is a beautiful thing.”
