A Global Look at Queer

Thursday, 8th February, 2018
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

“The diversity of the LGBTQ+ community is often obscured by a focus on white, gay, cis men. Academics from the University of Nottingham will share and discuss some aspects of their favourite works in order to explore some of the less well-known dimensions of queer lives across the world. In doing so, they will ask what it means, in different contexts, to be ‘queer’

Hongwei Bao (Department of Film, Culture and Media) will be reading about queer lives in Manila from Under Bright Lights: Gay Manila and the Global Scene by Bobby Benedicto. Onni Gust (Department of History) will discuss the importance of thinking about the intersections between race, gender, sexuality and disability by looking at the a piece performed by Sins Invalid. Ibtisam Ahmed (School of Politics and IR) will look at the importance of decolonising queerness by analysing an excerpt on pre-colonial South Asian queerness from Queering India: Same-Sex Love and Eroticism in Indian Culture and Society by Ruth Vanita.

Please join us for an evening of rich discussion and diverse voices.”
